NOVELTY – The polymeric blend comprises 1-99% of alginate and 1-99% of fibroin obtained in the form of a solidified homogeneous mixture. The solidified homogeneous mixture is obtained by performing electrostatic interaction between alginate and fibroin. A plasticizer is also included in the polymeric blend. USE – Polymeric blend or composite used in medical article including prosthetics, implants, dressings, lenses, and dental or surgical equipments, and for use in cell immobilization system and controlled release system (all claimed). ADVANTAGE – The polymeric blend shows enhanced mechanical and physical properties, water stability, and good biodegradability, and can be prepared in an eco-friendly and cost-effective manner with reduced weight. DETAILED DESCRIPTION – INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) a composite, which comprises fibroin fibers dispersed in a polymeric matrix of natural origin; (2) a method for producing a polymeric blend, which involves preparing a solution of alginate and a strong inorganic base, adding a plasticizer into alginate and base solution, and adding a solution of fibroin solution, and then evaporating solvent from the system; and (3) a method for producing composite, which involves preparing a solution of alginate and a strong inorganic base, adding plasticizer in the prepared solution, cutting fibroin fibers uniformly in the prepared solution, and evaporating the solvent from the system. DESCRIPTION OF DRAWING(S) – The drawing shows a schematic optical micrograph of the polymeric blend.
