NOVELTY – Acyl nitrates are prepared by reaction of acyl halides with silver nitrate at 0-80 degrees C in the presence of minerals e.g. montmorillonite K10 or KSF, olivine, kaolin or bentonite, to form heterogeneous mixts. USE – USE The acyl nitrate is used for nitrating activated aromatic cpds., e.g. toluene, phenol, cresols, vanillin, isovanillin, naphthalene, etc. ADVANTAGE – ADVANTAGE Stability of acyl nitrates is improved, allowing heating in various solvents for several hours. Yields are comparable or better than from conventional nitration reactions. With phenol and toluene, ortho/para isomer yield ratio is lower than from other known nitration reactions.
